Mimi Damrauer is an award-winning paper collage artist and instructor from Phoenix, AZ. She combines painting, stitching, drawing & collage to create, modern, one-of-a-kind artworks for wall decor.
Growing up with a very creative mother and sisters meant that art and cooking projects were a constant in her home. When she declared, at 9 years old, that she wanted to learn to sew, her mom promptly sent her to the Singer sewing shop at the mall. One bungled tennis dress later, the foundation of her self-taught style and business was laid out.
The next layer would be added that same year, when she took art lessons at the Toledo Museum of Art where she learned her primary and secondary colors. The inklings of a business were planted! That lead to her whimsical style of painting, stitching, drawing & hand-cut wobbly designs.
As she goes through my life, she appreciates more and more how to edit and make her life less complicated. She is getting back to basics and simplicity. She sees objects in their simplest forms and her style is all about editing what she sees down to recognizable images. She is simply striving for good design. In a world that can be so busy and overwhelming, she hopes that her artworks are pleasing and joyful to look at.
I am inspired always by looking around me…the sidewalk cracks, the way old bricks lay out, the colors of tulips on a farm in the pacific northwest, the mountain scenery driving through the west, and the lines on stones on a beach in Italy.
